This fact has been known for a number of years as has the fact that activated oxygen kills by oxidation, similarly to chloride and peroxide. The complete oxidation of organic compounds results in the production of mainly carbon dioxide and water. We can illustrate this by way of chemical equation, using the breakdown of carbohydrates in the bacteria as an example:                                                      The only residuals of the reaction are simple oxides which are harmless.
